Medical Practitioner
Gabor Maté is a retired physician who, after 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. Although Dr Maté isn't specifically a TMS doctor, his life work overlaps flawlessly with the TMS mind-body medicine principles. I thought it was relevant and really insightful to see just how far the rabbit hole goes in terms of the effects of trauma and stress in the human body and include some of his resources here to highlight this.
A renowned speaker, and bestselling author, Dr Gabor Maté is highly sought-after for his expertise on addiction, stress and it's relation to childhood development. He weaves together scientific research, case studies and his own insights and experience to present a broad perspective to healing.
Dr Maté focusses on how emotional stress is not just a cause of major mental health issues such as anxiety, addiction, depression, ADHD, ADD and chronic pain but a major cause of physical illnesses, from cancer to autoimmune conditions and many other chronic diseases. The brain and body systems that process emotions are intimately connected with our hormones, the nervous system, and in particular the immune system.
Dr Maté’s insight into the relationship of the mind and the body are perfectly presented in his book 'When the Body Says No', one of my favourite books. I find this subject matter totally fascinating, he has shown me SO much logic and reasoning behind why am and why others are the way they are.
Dr Maté is a renowned addiction expert and believes that the source of addictions is to be found in our early childhood environment showing that all addictions originate in trauma and emotional loss. It is a completely mindblowing concept but also completely logical and obvious once you understand the concepts and can see the patterns in your own life of in those close to you.
In his fascinating interview with Russel Brand they dive into the psyche of some of the world's leaders, how their traumas are apparent in their adult personalities and why they are in positions of power. It's a really deep conversation that takes MANY turns, some shocking and controversial but SO INCREDIBLY eye-opening, I highly recommend you take a look at that. It makes you see EVERYONE in a different light from a more compassionate perspective, no matter who they are. As many mind-body experts experience, he also pulls from his own life and own traumas to view his own behaviours and addictions in a brighter healing light to help others navigate and heal their own lives.
A film is being released soon about his work entitled 'The Wisdom of Trauma', which I will post about as soon as it's released. He's a fascinating man with an enormously warm compassionate demeanour, I hope you take the time to dive into some of his videos and teachings, your mind and heart will be blown wide open.
