If you have been navigating the world of mind-body healing for a while, you likely know the theory inside out. You understand that repressed emotions impact the nervous system and fuel chronic conditions. You likely also know that to heal, we must feel.
Yet, when you sit down to actually 'do the work', you might hit a wall. Or not know exactly what to do, or how to do it. I faced this dilemma myself, and found that creating an intentional daily (ideally) practice that helped me to cue those emotions up really helped.
Initially, I used the practice called JournalSpeak taught by Nicole Sachs, which you may already know about. But perhaps you've stared at a blank page and felt your mind go completely empty. Maybe you've felt a sudden wave of fatigue, irritation, or an urgent need to clean the kitchen. There are so many ways that resistance can show up when our brain believes that something we're trying to do is somehow 'threatening', and I want you to know that it is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of your nervous system seeking protection.
Your nervous system may have built elaborate mechanisms to keep your feelings hidden, and rightly so; some feelings are perceived to be 'too big' or 'too difficult' to be faced, so these protective mechanisms are important features. So, when you try to access them, your internal alarm system rings, and avoidance becomes your best friend.
For a deeper dive into why your brain does this, read my full guide on dealing with resistance to mind-body work here.
You may have already explored my dedicated Journalspeak page, browsed and maybe exhausted my list of journaling themes and topics, or read through my static JournalSpeak prompts page.
These resources are the map, but my new FREE Emotional Exploration Tool is the vehicle. We built this tool to be a direct extension of those guides, designed specifically to bypass the perfectionist in your brain who edits every thought and avoids every feeling before it enters your mind or body. It is an invitation to stop bracing and finally let the armour drop in an easy-to-use, guided and prompted format.
This isn't about keeping a record of your pain, or rehashing all your difficult experiences; it's about moving stagnant emotional energy through your body so you don't have to carry it anymore, and the 'stress cycle' of these emotions can be completed.
⭐ You choose the direction: Instead of panicking over where to start, you can select from over 400 prompts categorised by the specific emotion or theme you are grappling with. Alternatively, you can allow the tool to randomise the prompts and simply browse through a few before you see one that resonates.
⭐ Feel the feelings: The ultimate goal here is not to train ourselves to be able to feel so that we no longer suppress ourselves and add to our emotional baggage. Prompts help us get there because they help us to evoke emotions related to specific scenarios, memories or experiences in order for our body to feel them.
⭐ Choose your expression style: You can use a journal to help you, or simply sit with the prompt or speak out loud about it. The key is to 'summon' the emotion and tune into your body as it experiences it. There is no fixed timeframe to practice (often the biggest hurdle to starting); you can start small and build from there.
⭐ Feeling feelings somatically: One of the biggest fears we face is that if we open the door to an emotion, we will drown in it. But physiology tells us a different story. Neuroscience suggests that an emotion, when fully experienced as a somatic event (a physical sensation) without the "story" attached, has a lifespan of only about 90 seconds. This tool helps you get the mental story out of the way quickly so you can drop into the body, let that short wave wash through you, and complete the cycle.
⭐ Total anonymity: There is no sign-up or login. You are not "joining" anything. You are simply stepping into a clearing. There is no paywall or registration wall to using this tool.
⭐ The ritual of release: Once you have used the tool to help you feel, any potentially messy, rage-filled, or fearful words you may have written (if you choose to journal as your method of expression) that you dare not speak are digitally 'released' (burned, dissolved or exploded). Each time you visit the site, a new, fresh session opens.
⭐ Nothing is saved: Words vanish. It is the digital equivalent of screaming into a pillow. It signals to your nervous system: I have felt it, and I am safe to release it.
This tool is a powerful entry point for emotional expression and processing. However, I know that for many of you, the fear isn't just about expressing the emotion, but about being overwhelmed by it. You might worry that if you open the floodgates, you won't be able to close them.
That is why inside the tool, I have included two more free gifts to help you along:
🎁 My FREE Emotional-Attunement Blueprint, a detailed PDF with the rationale behind this part of the work and the importance of feeling your feelings physically, not getting stuck in stories and thinking about them in your head. It helps to fully understand the work before doing any of it.
🎁 I have also embedded a FREE audio meditation from my Mind-Body Mastery Membership, to help you ground and regulate after your emotional expression practices.
And if you find that you are ready to go beyond expression and truly learn how to inhabit your emotional world safely, to build the capacity to hold these feelings without getting stuck in the story, I highly recommend my 12-part masterclass, which is included in my monthly membership, called Emotional Embodiment. It is the deep-dive into this part of the work, where I teach you how to experience your emotions in your body somatically and hwo to support your body through and after an emotional exercise so that the body can process survival stress safely.
