In these conversations, I talk to members of the chronic pain / TMS community, to discover what worked for them in their stress illness recovery and where they are today because of it. Watch the video above or click through to YouTube using the button below the video, to watch there if you prefer.
This week I had the pleasure of talking to Dr Dan Ratner, chronic back pain survivor, mind-body recovery expert, Psychologist, Crushing Doubt podcast host and all-around lovely dude. His approach to chronic pain recovery is in many ways unique to what you might be used to in this space although there is a lot of cross-over with other practitioners messages, his focus on doubt and the way we see ourselves is one of the reasons I love his work so much. His inclusion of specific topics about self-esteem and self-worth really resonate with me and really made me stand up and take notice of (aka binge watch) his work once I discovered him online.
I knew that TMS folks share many personality traits that keep them in pain, self-doubt, perfectionism, people-pleasing, playing small etc. but I didn't really ever make the connection between me feeling powerless and the triggering of symptoms. For example; since discovering this and implementing some of his teachings, I've been able to notice the onset of sneaky mind-body symptoms that come along if I'm feeling triggered by a scenario that makes me feel powerless. It's quite a revelation for me and many others that I've shared this with.
This conversation was fun, heartfelt, enlightening and also felt like it flew by, so we decided to do a follow-up episode soon where I can actually get to the questions I had ready for him! We just let the conversation wander from his discovery of Dr John Sarno's work in his twenties, through his own chronic back pain recovery into his present practice today. It weirdly felt like visiting a friend I had known for ages. I think you'll enjoy it!
