In these conversations, I talk to members of the chronic pain / TMS community, to discover what worked for them in their stress illness recovery. Watch the video above or click through to YouTube using the button below the video, to watch there if you prefer.
This week I interviewed the lovely Karen Isaacs-Goldman joining me from Long Island New York. Her story goes back decades, and through various different symptoms and obstacles along the way. But her learning and dedication won the race, once she tuned into her real voice, not her anxious racing mind. She taught herself to feel safe and courageously started to change her life.
Karen was a patient of Dr Sarno, which I found totally fascinating of course! I felt like I was totally fangirling over the Dr Sarno parts of our conversation!
Karen experienced hip pain, knee pain, TMJ, bad headaches that kept her bed-bound and avoiding fun opportunities in her life. We also discuss and bonded over our frustration over specific sounds, we both have a "disorder" called Misophonia, where certain sounds trigger emotional or physiological responses that some might perceive as unreasonable given the circumstance of them. Such as people chewing, rustling paper, clocks ticking - that kind of thing.
We both have similar anxiety histories too, health anxiety, catasrophising, and overthinking tendencies. I find it fascinating how we are all so similar in this community. Her life mantra now is "DON'T FREAK OUT" - which should be the universal strap-line for all TMS healing!
Her journey since meeting and being treated by Dr Sarno eventually led her to the JournalSpeak method - the work of Nicole Sachs (who also worked with Dr Sarno in the Rusk Centre for Rehabilitation in New York), we talk about the amazing expressive writing work that helped heal my TMS also and how Nicole was the catalyst to both our recoveries. As was Dan Buglio's amazing daily TMS mindset coaching videos called Pain Free You.
