I have been waiting for the release of Dr Gottfried's book "The Auto Immune Cure", since hearing her talk about it a while back on the Huberman Lab podcast. Dr Gottfried leans heavily into the root causes of these kinds of conditions, stating that autoimmune diseases are becoming exponentially more common with rates higher than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. Focusing on how trauma, especially childhood trauma measured by the ACE score, is strongly linked to increased risk of autoimmune and chronic diseases later in life.
They discuss how conventional (western) medicine often fails to address the root causes of autoimmunity, focusing only on symptom management with drugs or surgeries. The doctors emphasise there are now clear pathways to improve autoimmune conditions through an integrative, root-cause approach addressing physical, mental and emotional factors. They discuss various therapies and interventions that can increase neuroplasticity and help rewire trauma responses in the brain and body including stress reduction and trauma healing is most effective for autoimmune conditions.
They also touch on her involvement in psychedelic-assisted therapy, which I also find fascinating, so this episode was something I simply had to share with you.
I hope you enjoy this conversation!
